In a statement to the Beta news agency, Milosavljevic said that Ikea is interested in the factories that manufacture children’s bed, mattresses and other wooden products, as well as in the construction of three shopping centres, spanning 100,000 square kilometres, over the next five years.
The Minister added that IKEA’s investments may also attract other leaders in food and drink retail, as well as in technical and acoustic equipment retail.
According to Milosavljevic Serbia is currently negotiating with the trade chains Spar, Ramstore and Tesco concerning the opening of their stores in Serbia, which primarily depends on the world financial crisis and building licences.
The Minister explained that Serbian bureaucracy and problems at local level, such as community plans, building licences and locations, repel foreign investors and therefore Serbia must alter its laws, simplify its procedures and synchronise them with European standards.
Milosavljevic voiced hope that Serbia will continue expanding its markets, strengthening competition and attracting new investors in 2009.
