Opening a conference titled “EU Enlargement in the Western Balkans”, organised by the Institute for International Politics and Economics, Vukicevic said that the Serbian people showed their support for Serbia’s EU integration in the last elections and this is the basic task of the government.
He said that Serbia does not want any new conditions to be set for the EU accession process, such as the demand to recognise Kosovo.
For us, Kosovo is not independent; it is a part of Serbia. We will never recognise Kosovo and we do not want such conditions to be imposed, said Vukicevic. He reiterated that Serbia is defending its integrity and sovereignty by peaceful and diplomatic means.
He said that the main problem Serbia is facing in the EU integration process is cooperation with the Hague tribunal.
Serbia will make every effort regarding this issue and a lot has been done already, said Vukicevic.
He stressed that neither the EU nor the Hague tribunal doubt that there is political will within Serbia to complete cooperation with the tribunal but certain EU countries do not appreciate the efforts the Serbian government is making, which can be counterproductive because it could encourage anti-European elements in Serbia.
Participants at today’s conference examined some of the key issues related to EU enlargement and Serbia’s EU integration process.
