Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica told a press conference today that the government adopted a decree on establishing the National Minorities Council in order to protect ethnic, religious, language and other specific features of all national minorities living in Serbia.
He said that this body will comprise six ministers in charge of minority issues, with the Prime Minister presiding. The Council will also include presidents of all national minorities’ councils in the country.
Following the recent ethnic conflicts in Vojvodina, Kostunica said that the government is drafting a report on the Hungarian national minority in Vojvodina. He said he hopes that this document will be competed and adopted at the next session of the government.
The Prime Minister also voiced hope that the position of the Hungarian national community in Vojvodina will improve, especially following the messages sent by EU ministers from Maastricht as well as recent visit of Hungarian President Ferenc Madl. He also said that the government will do everything in its power to prevent conflicts and to punish the perpetrators of ethnically motivated incidents accordingly.
