Speaking at a roundtable discussion on education, training, future employment and self-employment of children with developmental disabilities, held at the Belgrade City Hall, Ljajic said that it is necessary to find ways to meet the needs of children with disabilities and these children must be made to feel that they are a part of society.
The Serbian President’s wife Tatjana Tadic, who sponsored the roundtable discussion and the project “My Little Table”, said that the project aims at raising public awareness about the problems of children with developmental disabilities.
She stressed that the degree to which disabled people are integrated within a society is a good indicator of how democratic that society is, adding that a lot has been done in Serbia to deal with prejudices against disabled people.
Serbian Minister of Education Zarko Obradovic said that the long term development of a society depends on education and the Ministry attaches special attention to the education of children with special needs.
A national education strategy is to be adopted soon and the education and living conditions of children with special needs will be an important part of this strategy, said Obradovic and expressed his belief that these children will receive encouragement to develop their potential throughout all levels of their education.
He said that it is important to strive towards making these children independent adults but they must continually be provided with support.
Participants of the roundtable discussion informed potential employers about financial benefits they will be able to receive if they employ disabled persons and it was mentioned that the project “My Little Table” will support children in receiving training during their school years to advance their skills in order to become independent as soon as possible.
The discussion was held as part of the project “My Little Table” that was organised by Jasmina Maksimovic, an expert from the City Secretariat for Education, fashion designer and editor of the magazine Marketing Serbia Dragana Ognjenovic and children and teachers from schools for children with developmental disabilities in Belgrade and Kosovska Mitrovica.
