Speaking at a ceremony held to present scholarships from the Fund for Young Talents to 1,000 of the best students, Cvetkovic said that the government is determined not to change its priorities, despite the global financial crisis.
It is certain that the country’s priority is to invest in education and youth, which is proved by the scholarships that have been awarded, said the Prime Minister, adding that it is the government’s mission to make education accessible to all and to help educated people find employment.
He said that providing scholarships is just a first step and the state, together with potential employers, should make it possible that more scholarships are made available to young people.
He said that an investment in education is an investment in the future. He expressed his conviction that scholarship holders will stay in the country after finishing their education and help develop the country.
Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Regional Development Mladjan Dinkic said that in cooperation with private enterprises the government will make efforts to enlarge the Fund for Young Talents, adding that such scholarships will be awarded on condition that the beneficiary must work for the company that supported them financially.
Serbian Minister of Youth and Sport Snezana Samardzic-Markovic said that currently the funds for the Fund for Young Talents stand at some RSD 500 million, but they will be increased in 2009 by 25%.
She reminded those present that the Fund’s management board consists of six ministers, the president of the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences and the rector of Belgrade University.
The 1000 best students signed contracts concerning scholarships each worth RSD 300,000, which will be paid in 12 monthly installments.
