The document envisaging ILO support to all employment and social care institutions in Serbia was signed by Minister of Labour and Social Policy Rasim Ljajic, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Regional Development Mladjan Dinkic and director of ILO regional office for Central and Eastern Europe Mark Levin.
At a press conference following the signing Dinkic said that the ILO will help Serbia to improve its public administration and social dialogue in order to ensure long-term economic development.
He explained that socially vulnerable groups, such as the disabled, the Roma or young people, may now expect assistance in finding jobs, adding that employment will be encouraged in underdeveloped areas, as well as that gender discrimination will not be tolerated.
The social dialogue will now be easier since the ILO will share its positive experiences with Serbia and help it to establish a system in which workers will have dignified jobs and be respected, while employers will be encouraged to take on more workers.
Dinkic announced that next year the government will keep supporting the economy through measures intended to stimulate investment and employment, as well as support for SMEs. He also added that additional funds have been earmarked in the budget for these purposes this year.
He voiced hope that an agreement between the government, employers and trade unions regarding measures for alleviating the consequences of the global financial crisis in Serbia will soon be reached.
Ljajic pointed out that Macedonia is now the only country in the region that has not yet signed a Memorandum on Cooperation with the ILO.
He expressed hope that the agreement will be a turning point in the future cooperation between Serbia and the ILO, as well as between social partners in Serbia.
Levin said that the programme aims to strengthen government institutions in order to improve the functioning of the labour market, reduce unemployment and develop social care, social dialogue and employee rights protection.
Levin said that the ILO will participate in analysing the global financial crisis’ influences and propose measures for alleviating its effects upon Serbia.
