European Parliament debate Serbian Diaspora

The Serbian Ministry of the Diaspora stated that a public debate regarding the Serbian Diaspora, its position, participation in and importance for the upcoming European Parliament elections was held today in Brussels.
According to the statement, State Secretary at the Ministry of the Diaspora Miodrag Jaksic pointed to the necessity of the Diaspora’s greater participation in political life and the forming of central councils in order to provide better working conditions for Serbian organisations in the Diaspora and speedier EU integration.
Jaksic also stressed that visas must be abolished and Serbian citizens enabled to travel all over Europe.
All participants endorsed visa abolition, despite the fact that some EU governments are opposed to it and unanimously supported Serbia’s efforts to acquire EU candidate status in 2009.
President of the Serbian Institute for Public Diplomacy in Brussels Zoran Milinkovic and representatives of the Serbian Diaspora from seven European countries took part in the debate.
Participants were also addressed by members of the European Parliament, Alojz Peterle from Slovenia, Paul Rubig from Austria, Adrian Severin from Romania and Gisela Kallenbach from Germany, as well as member of the European Commission David Kulin from Ireland.
