Speaking to the press at a joint action titled “Lets walk together”, organised to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Ljajic said that there is a good legal framework in Serbia concerning the rights of disabled people but laws are not being implemented properly.
He said that implementation requires quite large funds, stressing that the state will not reduce funds for disabled people.
He said that nearly 70% of all the persons with disabilities in Serbia are poor, only 13% are employed and half of them live on various social benefits.
He said that the state sets aside nearly RSD 22 million per month to finance disabled people’s organisations and this year RSD 100 million was allocated for projects by these organisations.
Ljajic said that even though a lot has been done regarding legislation and financial assistance we cannot be satisfied with the position of disabled people in Serbia.
He stressed that it is necessary to raise public awareness about the importance of improving the position of disabled people because this is a human rights issue.
He voiced hope that next year a law will be passed according to which employees who employ one disabled person per 50 employees will get certain types of relief.
He said that that law is the best way to increase employment opportunities for disabled people, announcing that the Labour Ministry will also set aside funds for creating a more disabled-friendly environment.
