At a round table themed “Council of Europe Action Plan for people with disabilities and the disability policy in 2009”, Lucic stressed that providing help for the disabled within their communities, not only in the hospitals, is of absolute necessity.
The plan should provide for greater participation of the disabled in public and cultural life, better access to information, employment and improved health care and legal protection.
She said that there has been a greater inclusion of the disabled in Serbian political life recently.
Over the past two years, some services for the disabled have been installed in 122 municipalities, she announced.
Nearly RSD 300 million was set aside this year for the disabled from the Ministry’s funds, she added.
Vladan Joksimovic from the Council of Europe Office in Serbia said that the action plan envisages a number of campaigns aimed at upgrading awareness of citizens in these categories of the population as well as better cooperation between government and NGOs..
The round table was organised by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy and the National Organisation of the Disabled.
