Czech Republic affirms support for Serbian EU accession

The Ministry of Economy and Regional Development stated that at the meeting of the Serbian-Czech joint committee for economic cooperation, Czech representatives affirmed they will support Serbia’s integration into EU during their EU presidency.
The statement adds that at the meeting held this week in Belgrade they confirmed that during its EU presidency from January 1 2009, the Czech Republic will put Serbia and other Western Balkan countries at the top of its long-term political and economic priorities, thus endorsing Serbia’s EU integration process.
The two delegations agreed that their economic relations are improving, particularly over trade, which in the last two years went up by over 50% and amounts to $500 million a year on average.
A workshop themed “Investment Opportunities in Serbia” will be organised in Prague next year to present Serbia’s investment advantages.
The joint committee highlighted the following sectors as important for cooperation: energy, road and railway infrastructure, environmental protection etc.
Several areas of trade and economic cooperation were also identified, namely the development of small and medium-sized enterprises, regional development, transfer of technologies, agriculture and joint access to the developing world’s markets.
