Better status for Serbian community in Hungary

State Secretary for the Diaspora Miodrag Jaksic today met with State Secretary for Minorities at the Hungarian President’s Office Ferenc Gemesi and discussed the position of the Serbian community in Hungary.
The Ministry says in a statement that Jaksic insisted that the Hungarian government proposes a law on minority representation in parliament, in line with the Hungarian Constitution.
They also discussed the renovation and re-equipping of the Serbian cultural centres in Budapest and Pecuj, as well as better working conditions in Serbian schools in Budapest and Batanja.
Jaksic particularly stressed it is important to enable the Serbian minority to use their native tongue in schools.
During the visit he also met with the leadership of the Serbian self-government in Hungary and visited Pecuj, the town which will be the cultural capital of Europe in 2010. Afterwards he visited Saint Andrea and Lovra, the only municipality in Hungary with a majority Serbian population and a Serbian mayor.
