Kostunica said that Hungary as member of the European Union (EU) and NATO and as our neigbour can play a positive role for Serbia-Montenegro’s Euro-Atlantic integration.
Kostunica said he discussed with the Hungarian president all forms of economic cooperation, especially in the fields of transport and infrastructure, a Belgrade-Budapest highway, traffic on the Danube River, as well as air traffic between the two capitals.
They also discussed the position of ethnic minorities in the two countries and implementation of the Agreement on Protection of Minorities, which was ratified in Belgrade, and which is expected to be ratified in Budapest as well.
The two officials also discussed the latest ethnic clashes in Serbia’s northern province of Vojvodina and in Hungary. Kostunica said that it is not the Serbian government’s interest to quiet the reporting of such incidents, but to prevent them. He stressed that these events must not be inflated either.
The Hungarian president pointed out that the ties between the two countries are very strong, adding that the two ethnic communities have lived in Serbia and Hungary for centuries. Madl thanked the Serbian Prime Minister for paying a visit to Vojvodina and talking with members of the Hungarian ethnic community.
Madl also said that Hungary is ready to support Serbia-Montenegro on its road to the EU and NATO.
