In a statement to the Beta news agency, Skundric said that Banatski Dvor will be completed in several years, it will be able to hold 300 to 800 million cubic metres of gas and provide approximately 5 million cubic metres a day.
Serbia is negotiating with Russia regarding completion of the gas storage facility, said Skundric, adding that the Ministry plans eventually to enlarge its capacity to 1 billion cubic metres of natural gas.
The Minister stressed that there are several locations in Serbia convenient for new gas storage facilities, to be built on old gas and oil fields.
Serbia does not need facilities larger than this one for its own use but if Serbia constructs at least one more gas storage facility it could be a regional exporter of gas, explained Skundric.
The Ministers said that Slovakia, although six times smaller than Serbia, has a gas storage facility producing 8 billion cu m of gas.
According to him, gas could also be used as a raw material in the Pancevo petrochemical industry in the future.
He announced that if Russia is not interested in the Pancevo petrochemical industry and decides to exclude it from the agreement on buying 51% of shares of the Serbian oil industry NIS, Serbia will invest in this industry, as it has good export potential.
The Serbian economy is to be based on export-oriented companies, stressed the Minister.
