Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica has welcomed a statement by Hungarian Foreign Minister Laszlo Kovacs that the state of Serbia is not behind the incidents in Vojvodina and that the issue can be resolved in direct talks between official Belgrade and Budapest.
Kostunica told the national TV station RTS late on Monday that such a stand is in accord with Serbia’s efforts. He added that Belgrade and Budapest should hold talks on the improvement of the status of minorities and easing of the tension, since such a constructive policy proved effective in the tackling of the crisis in southern Serbia, ethnic-Albanian terror against Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija, as well as other problems in the region.
The Prime Minister stressed that Serbia has a very active role in regional peace efforts and in the creation of a different life in Southeastern Europe. He expressed the hope that the stands articulated in Brussels and Maastricht as well as those of the governments of Serbia and Serbia-Montenegro will be reiterated during Hungarian President Ferenc Madl’s visit to Belgrade today.
Kostunica recalled that both the Serbian government and the Council of Ministers have pledged to develop and improve ties between Serbia-Montenegro and Hungary and to facilitate relations between all ethnic communities living in Vojvodina.
