Milosavljevic pointed out that strengthening the health system for protection against TB, implementation of the Word Health Organisation’s Direct Observation Therapy Strategy all over Serbia and better detection amongst the population at risk resulted in a considerable decrease in the number of cases.
The Minister pointed out that a proposed project for the treatment of TB sufferers, submitted to the Green Light Committee in September, has just been approved, thus medicines can now be obtained according to the Committee’s recommendations.
Serbia has qualified to apply for a new project, from the ‘Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria’, due to its successful implementation over the preceding four years of the “TB control in Serbia” project, the Minister stated.
In 2003, TB disease rates stood at 37 out of 100,000 citizens. According to the latest data, this figure now stands at 27 out 100,000 people.
By the end of 2009 the aim is to reduce the number to 25 per 100,000 citizens.
The annual meeting on TB consists of specialists for pulmonary diseases and TB, microbiologists from all over Serbia, representatives of the government’s council for AIDS and TB projects, international organisations and guests from neighbouring countries.
