At a round table discussion themed “Cooperation of State Institutions on Gender Equality”, she announced the adoption of the national strategy by the end of the year while the law should be adopted by mid-2009.
She noted that women in Serbia earn less than men and they are not equally represented in politics
Advisor for the EU Integration Office Sanja Mesanovic said that gender equality is one of the main priorities set by Brussels on the road to EU integration.
She added that there are nearly 20% female MPs in the Serbian parliament, while the percentage in the EU varies, from 13% in Poland to 60% in Sweden.
There are more unemployed women than men, whereas those women who do work have salaries averaging less than 16% of men’s, she said.
The discussion is organised as part of the project “Implementation of gender suppositions for stability of institutional mechanisms”, in cooperation with UNICEF.
Also taking part were Vojvodina Secretary for Labour, Employment and Gender Equality Miroslav Vasin, Deputy Public Prosecutor Gordana Stojanovic-Milosevic and representatives of local self-government and NGOs.
