At a commemorative ceremony marking the 67th anniversary of a mass execution of several thousand Kragujevac citizens in World War II, Tadic stressed that we will never give up our identity while striving to establish peaceful relations with others.
We will build our identity together with other people in the world, but we will never forget victims at Sumarice and will always return here with a message of peace, stressed the Serbian President at “Big School Class“ at Sumarice.
He pointed out that peace is the greatest value of humanity and recalled that in the 20th century Serbia was affected by every war waged in Europe.
In Serbia, there have been a large number of victims, and we thus have an obligation and responsibility to those victims in the upcoming years, said Tadic and stressed that Serbia, bearing in mind its own victims, also thinks about the victims from the neighbouring countries.
The commemorative ceremony was attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps, culture and Kragujevac students and citizens.
Bishop of Sumadija Jovan held a commemorative prayer this morning for the Kragujevac victims.
Afterwards, Serbian President Boris Tadic, Serbian parliament speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, Minister of Education Zarko Obradovic, Kragujevac Mayor Veroljub Stevanovic, Prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevic and students from the Krajuvac grammar school laid down wreaths.
Families of the killed, representatives of SUBNOR and German, US, Brazilian and Bosnia-Herzegovina embassies also laid down wreaths.
The commemorative ceremony was organised by the City of Kragujevac and the sector for veteran and disability protection of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy and the Ministry of Defence.
On October 21, 1941, several thousand people from Kragujevac were executed by the German army, as well as a number of students and teachers from the Kragujevac grammar school.
The mass execution of innocent Kragujevac citizens is one of the most tragic events in Serbia during World War II.
