Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Sasa Dragin said that harmonisation of laws with EU regulations in the area of agriculture and various programmes of financial support will make Serbian economy competitive on the European market.
Dragin said that the Ministry wants to stimulate farmers to intensify agricultural production for it to become more profitable and so that farmers could become entrepreneurs.
The implementation of the provisional trade agreement with the EU will start next year, when Serbia could also become candidate for EU membership, he said.
Dragin announced the formation of local funds for the development of agriculture.
Assistant Minister Milos Milanovic said that agriculture participates with 10.8% in GDP, which should be decreased to 5.6% in the next six years.
It is important that Serbia becomes member of the World Trade Organisation and to start implementing the joint agrarian policy of the EU in a move to liberalise market and restructure production.
He also said that customs protection of domestic products should be decreased from the present 20.4% to 3.2% in the next six years.
