Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today that Vojvodina was and will be the role model of an interethnic society, and stressed that the government has done and will do everything to tackle individual incidents through preventive measures, increased efficiency of the police and intensified penalty measures for criminals.

In a written statement, the Prime Minister commented on initiatives of the Hungarian president and foreign minister as saying that no evidence has been presented to back up such requests. He confessed that there were individual incidents in Vojvodina, but added that they cannot be the incentive for an initiative such as this one from Budapest.
Kostunica said that on his visit yesterday to Vojvodina, he met with representatives of all ethnic minorities. They agreed that interethnic relations in Vojvodina are traditionally good. They also stressed that recently there have been certain incidents directed against the Hungarian community in Vojvodina, but also against other minorities as well as those directed against Serbs.
Kostunica reiterated his stand that these incidents are no reason for internationalisation of this issue because that can only harm the citizens of Vojvodina and jeopardise the good relations between Serbia-Montenegro and Hungary.
