The Minister explained that the new printer will help blind children to access textbooks and other books written in Braille.
Ljajic voiced regret over the fact that Serbia does not have a unique data base so that the exact number of the blind and visually impaired is not known.
He added that associations of the blind estimate that there are around 12,000 blind and visually impaired persons in Serbia.
Ljajic confirmed that the Ministry has drafted a bill which will enter parliamentary procedure next year and noted that the Ministry assists 44 organisations of the blind and visually impaired, for which purposes RSD 14 million was set aside in 2008.
According to him, the Ministry has also prepared a bill on independent movement with guide dogs which will help facilitate the movements of the blind and visually impaired in Serbia.
He also announced that the Ministry will make efforts to increase funds to assist associations for disabled persons and their activities.
President of the Serbian Association for the Blind Milan Stosic pointed out that this association continuously cooperates with the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, which is gradually addressing the lack of systematic solutions.
That is why we use occasions such as this, as well as the help of willing people, stressed Stosic.
The Serbian Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired ”White Stick” organised today in Belgrade the action “Let’s Walk Together”, during which citizens with blindfolds crossed a street on the corner of Kralja Milana and Resavska.
President of the association Vesna Nestorovic recalled that the problem of instructors, who will train the blind to move by themselves, has not yet been solved.
She stressed that associations for the blind support the draft law on self-movement with guide dogs, but added that the blind first have to learn how to move on their own.
