Following talks with Pancevo authorities, Dulic said residents of the city are still exposed to a polluted environment, but the situation today is much better than it was during the previous few years, because the amount of oil and other pollutants in the air is now significantly smaller.
The Minister said that the Serbian government will insist that during privatisation of the chemical industry Petrohemija and the Pancevo oil refinery as part of the Serbian oil industry (NIS), buyers must invest in new technology and environmental protection.
According to Dulic, €64 million was invested in the refinery during the previous few years, in new technology as well as environmental protection, while nearly €13 million was invested in Petrohemija for the same purpose.
He said that in 2005 the state began to implement continuous measures to reduce air pollution in Pancevo, considering the fact that the percentage of pollutants has decreased, these measures have produced results.
Dulic added that residents of Pancevo must know that they are not alone and relevant ministries in cooperation with local authorities will make all efforts to reduce pollution.
Mayor of Pancevo Vesna Martinovic stressed that a special team has been formed which will deal with the air pollution, and will determine steps to be taken in case of accidents.
The Minister also talked today with residents of Pancevo, representatives of Petrohemija and the refinery, and later visited a Petrohemija factory for cleaning waste water.
