Serbian Minister of Labour and Social Policy Rasim Ljajic said today, on the occasion of the International Day of Elderly People, that large funds are necessary for improving the position of the elderly in Serbia.

Ljajic recalled that the national strategy for the elderly was adopted two years ago.
According to him, the poverty index among the population over 65 years of age is by 3% higher than among general population. The poverty index for elderly people is 9.6% and for the overall population 6.6%.
Every fourth elderly person needs home care and every sixth needs help to keep personal hygiene, Ljajic pointed out and specified that only 100 municipalities provide help for the elderly, which is quite insufficient.
State Secretary at the Ministry of Health Zeljko Obradovic pointed out that Serbia does not have enough gerontologists and the Ministry will try to train a number of internists to assist the elderly.
Red Cross Director Dragan Radovanovic warned that Serbia is the sixth in the world when it comes to life expectancy, and that with 15.7% of people over 65 is on the fourth place on the list of countries with the oldest population.
According to the 2002 census, more than 900,000 people in central Serbia and almost 300,000 people in Vojvodina are 65 and older.
In 1990 the UN General Assembly declared October 1 the International Day of Elderly People. The day has been marked in Serbia since 1991.
