The Serbian government has expressed regret over the publication of the book “The Jewel of Medina” by Sherry Jones in Serbia for commercial interests, thus hurting the feelings of members of the Islamic community.
The publication of this book, considering complex and sensitive political situation in the world, is not in the interest of the struggle for preservation of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
On the other hand, the government cannot interfere with independent publication activity since the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and expression of thought and they represent a precondition of every democratic society.
The feeling of personal responsibility of those who make decisions which can have far-reaching negative effects is of importance, according to a statement.
