Cvetkovic said at the unveiling ceremony which marks the 200th year of higher education in Serbia and the Belgrade University that two hundred years ago a clear stance was taken that education is extremely important, and the present Serbian government has taken the same stance.
He said that the government will make efforts to improve the education system, because investment in the youth and education is an investment in the country’s future, and Serbia needs young and educated people.
At the very place where the memorial plaque has been unveiled, 200 years ago, Dositej Obradovic opened a higher education school, the first of its kind in Serbia, and a predecessor of today’s university.
Belgrade University Rector Professor Branko Kovacevic said at the ceremony that the Serbian education system is being reformed, as elsewhere in the world.
Our goal is to transform into a modern university while preserving our traditions, and above all to educate young people, who chiefly working for themselves and their families will also work for the country and society. When they do well, all will be well in the country too, said Kovacevic.
He recalled that the University of Belgrade has signed agreements with 160 universities in 60 countries, and the goal of the year of higher education, which will be observed until July 2009, is indeed to return our higher education system its international repute.
The ceremony was also attended by Education Minister Zarko Obradovic, President of the National Higher Education Council Srdjan Stankovic and guests of the Belgrade University from abroad.
A number of events will be held today in Belgrade to mark the 200th year of higher education in Serbia and the University of Belgrade.
Education Minister Zarko Obradovic opened this morning a students’ conference titled “Roots, Strength and Challenges”, which is being held in the Sava Centre.
Obradovic said at the opening that the Education Ministry’s goal is to increase the number of higher education establishments in Serbia and to reduce university fees.
He said that high fees make it impossible for many young people to carry on with education, and added that the Ministry will make efforts to provide more employment to graduates.
Serbia is too poor a country for its young educated people to be unemployed. They must be the force of development and change in society, said the Minister.
He stressed that the Serbian government has decided to increase budgetary funds for education and science, and added that it is necessary to increase financial support for universities and scientific research, above all in areas closely related to the country’s quicker economic development.
Obradovic said that other goals of the Education Ministry are efficiency, accessibility and equality in education.
According to Obradovic, in these respects the education system must be regulated according to European standards, and particularly in harmony with Serbia’s strategy for EU integration.
The Minister said that it is also necessary to have a national policy on the return of highly qualified and prominent experts to Serbia.
He said that education must promote Serbia’s national values, democracy, humanism and social responsibility in society.
Serbian parliament speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic and Minister Obradovic held a cocktail party today at the House of Parliament, and a solemn academy “Nation of Thinkers and Poets” will be held this evening in the Sava Centre, which will be attended by Serbian President Boris Tadic.
