He said that Serbia will demand that a resolution be adopted at the UN General Assembly session so that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) may be consulted on the issue of Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence.
He expressed conviction that UN member states will support Serbia’s demand and thus clearly show their commitment to respecting international law and preserving peace and stability.
Six months after the unilateral declaration of independence it is clear that not a single of the effects hoped for by those who stand behind this act has been achieved, said Spasojevic.
Speaking about reconfiguration of the international civilian mission in Kosovo, he said that he is extremely dissatisfied with the UN Secretary General’s decision to begin the process without a Security Council resolution to approve it.
He said that it is a particularly worrying fact that the illegal, so called Kosovo security service personnel are receiving training from NATO according to the proposal presented by Ahtisaari, which violates Security Council Resolution 1244.
At the briefing, which was attended by 29 military attaches, priorities in the work of the Serbian government were presented, as well as priorities of the Defence Ministry.
Spasojevic said that it is very important to adopt basic strategic documents.
According to Spasojevic, one of the priorities until the end of the year is to sign the information security agreement with the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, followed by Serbia’s full membership in the Partnership for Peace programme and opening of a Serbian mission in Brussels.
He said that one of the priorities of the Defence Ministry is to establish new organisational structures, continue the modernisation of the Serbian Army and complete construction of the military base in Cepotin in south central Serbia.
He said that this includes further improvement of the financial situation of members of the Serbian Army, the education and training of Defence Ministry employees in prestigious international military schools, as well as intensifying regional cooperation.
According to Spasojevic, defence cooperation with Russia and China has been improving over the years and will remain high on the list of priorities.
Speaking about cooperation with the US, he said that the programme which the Serbian Army is implementing jointly with the Ohio National Guard is one of the best 56 other similar US programmes around the world.
We are cooperating with 44 countries, which is an excellent basis for continuing this process, and very soon we will sign agreements with Spain and Portugal as well, said Spasojevic.
He said that he is pleased with the cooperation between the Defence Ministry and foreign military attaches accredited to Serbia during the last year.
