Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica welcomed a message of European Union (EU) foreign ministers from their meeting in Maastricht and described their position as "encouraging and logical". At a meeting held on Sept 4, EU foreign ministers reiterated their strong support to the preservation of the state union of Serbia-Montenegro and the signing of the stabilisation and association agreement with the EU, but with the inclusion of some technical particularities in the economic, trade and customs systems of the two members states.

EU has supported the preservation of the state union from the very beginning, even before the signing of the Belgrade Agreement, for which the EU served as a guarantor, Kostunica said in a statement to the Beta news agency.
He said that the EU backed integration processes in the Balkans with its attitude, and sent out a message that the Constitutional Charter must be respected.
Such an attitude by the EU additionally strengthens the pro-European commitment of Serbia-Montenegro and gives us a strong encouragement to speed up the process of the EU accession, read the statement by Kostunica.
