The Serbian police were strictly ordered to keep public peace and order without the use of force during the Serbian Radical Party rally, as well as to provide safety to all protestors and reporters, public institutions and foreign diplomatic representative offices.
During the second part of the rally, a group of protesters separated and after a series of provocations started a mass, brutal attack on police at the corner of Makedonska and Decanska streets.
A group with masked faces and wooden sticks clashed with police on the fringes of the protest rally, obviously in a move to cause conflict with police, the Ministry stated.
According to current data, 46 people were injured, including 25 police members, 19 citizens and two journalists.
The situation in Belgrade is peaceful at the moment. The Ministry calls on all citizens to be restrained in the interest of general safety and peace in the streets of the capital, the statement added.
Protesters, most of them masked, threw bottles, sticks, stones and other objects at police members, and demolished traffic lights and flower stands.
Nineteen people were taken into custody, three of whom are juveniles. Sixteen buildings and four police vehicles were damaged during the riots, the police stated.
