The Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management stated that the first shipment of top-quality blueberries from Arilje will be sent today to the buyer in London, one of the largest supermarket chains in Great Britain, the ASDA company which is part of the Wal-Mart stores.
The existence of this fruit in Serbia is a result of great effort and enthusiasm on the part of several individuals. Their years’ long work cultivating this high-quality fruit was fortunately recognised first of all by ex Norwegian ambassador to Serbia Hans Ola Urstad and ex director of USAID project in Serbia Jesse Bunch.
In May 2006, with their financial help, the first quality and certified seedlings were imported from the best seed plot in Europe, company Dierking from Gilten, Germany, and distributed to the best fruit growers and planted in the fields of Arilje and other parts of western Serbia.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management also recognised the potential of this fruit and supported the growers with state subsidies. At this moment, this fruit is grown on 40 hectares of land and has the means to expand further.
