According to a statement issued by the Interior Ministry, the meeting will be attended by representatives of Salzburg Forum member countries – Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria, the Western Balkan countries, representatives of the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), EUROPOL and SEKI Centre.
Besides results achieved and the activities to be undertaken to implement the Convention on Police Cooperation, various practical aspects of the implementation of the convention which came into force on July 11 in all signatory countries will also be examined at the meeting.
The ministerial meeting will contribute to the establishment of active cooperation among south-eastern and central European countries, and particularly close cooperation on the prevention and control of all forms of organised crime and terrorism.
The Salzburg Forum was founded in 2001 at Austria’s initiative. Countries taking part in the work of the forum besides Austria are the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania and Bulgaria, while Croatia holds observer status.
At the ministerial meeting held from September 20 to 21, 2007 in Bulgaria a Declaration on establishing a Group of Friends of the Salzburg Forum from the Western Balkans was adopted, including Serbia.
As an informal initiative for regional development within the framework of the EU the Salzburg Forum is active in three areas, which are development of intensive cooperation in central Europe, coordination and presenting the interests of countries of the region to European institutions.
The Salzburg Forum also works towards closer police cooperation, relations with third countries, and contributes to the internal security and stability of central and south-eastern Europe.
A decision was made at the meeting of the Forum in July 2007 to establish a Group of Friends to provide a basis for closer cooperation with third countries, considering the fact that relations with third countries are an integral part of cooperation within the Forum, concludes the statement.
