After his visit to the New Belgrade municipality police administration marking the beginning of applications
for new biometric passports, Djelic told the press that crowds are really very big.
He called on citizens whose identity card has not expired not to apply for a new one since they can do so until 2011, and those who do not plan to travel not to come for new passports.
This year is full of challenges for the Ministry of Interior because it has to replace identity cards, passports and licence plates, which is necessary so that citizens can start travelling without visas as soon as possible and so that Serbia can enter the EU by 2012.
Djelic invited citizens to inform his cabinet, the Ministry of Interior or the ombudsman if any police stations counter is not open until 8 pm or on Saturdays and announced that in cooperation with municipalities, chairs and air conditioning will be provided for citizens waiting in lines.
State Secretary of Interior Mirjana Orasanin stressed that the Ministry’s capacities are running at 90% and that the number of employees will be increased in the upcoming period to speed up the process of issuing documents.
Orasanin explained that the procedure for hiring more staff in the Ministry is detailed and depends on the Ministry of Finance which prescribes quotas.
