Police have arrested Marko Pancic, 26, from Zajecar, on suspicion of taking part in human trafficking, while Slobodan Vitomirovic, 44, also suspected of involvement in the racket, is still on the run.
On march 23, Pancic accepted Vitomirovic's offer to transport 20 Afghan nationals from the town of Borovac, near the Macedonian border, to a place on the road to Subotica. Vitomirovic was to pay €400 to Panic, who hid the illegal passengers in his truck's trailer.
Panic's truck was stopped on a highway between Pancevo and Belgrade.
The Afghans told police afterwards that they had paid $4,000 each to get to Germany via Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, and Serbia-Montenegro.
