The Ministry says in a statement that during the session, representatives from 193 countries will contemplate progress to date and new priorities aimed at improving public health.
Some of the issues to be discussed are related with the flu pandemic, fight against chronic non-contagious diseases – the implementation of a world strategy, strategy to reduce harmful alcohol consumption and the impact of climate changes to health.
In her opening address, WHO General Director Margaret Chan said that the WHO Assembly begins at a time of tragedy, considering that three crisis can easily be foreseen, the first of them being the consequences of a hike in food prices.
She explained that climate changes are the second crisis in sight, after which more droughts, floods and tropical storms can be expected, due to which there will be increased need for humanitarian aid.
The third crisis is the flu pandemic. General exposure has not been lessened therefore it would not be wise to be less alert and prepared than we are now, noted Chan.
In September 2005, Milosavljevic was appointed member of the WHO Standing Committee for Europe which has nine members. The appointment is valid for the period 2005–2008.
