According to the statement, the European Commission will use the funds to cover the expenses of the first two phases of the decommissioning, which include preparation of fuel for transport, and the European Commission has pledged that it will provide a donation worth $25 million for the third phase of the project when fuel will be transported from Vinca to a storage facility.
The most important task in the VIND programme is returning used fuel from the nuclear reactor in Vinca to Russia, the fuel’s country of origin, and the deadline for transportation is the end of 2010.
The VIND programme is the largest project ever in Serbia to be supported by the IAEA, and will be funded by the Serbian Ministry of Science and foreign donations.
