Serbian Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government Milan Markovic stated today that the Draft law on registers of births, marriages and deaths envisages that certificates from these registers may be issued in any municipality in Serbia regardless of the place of birth.
At a round table discussion at which the Draft law was presented, Markovic stressed that the certificates will be valid as long as the data contained in them is true and not for six months as has been the case so far.
He noted that the Draft law will reduce the workload in certain municipalities, such as Savski Venac, which has a high birth rate.
He also announced that in the next five years, these registers must be fully automatic but in such a way as to prevent any error and abuse.
Special representative to the Council of Europe Secretary-General to Serbia Konstantin Jerokostopulos said that the Council of Europe supports administration reforms in Serbia based on the principles of equality.
Public debate on the Draft law will last until the end of April and the document is to be adopted in September.
