The statement reads that in the talks with Jankovic, Pope Benedict expressed understanding for the gravity of the situation that Serbia is currently in, and hope that violence and human suffering will be avoided.
The Holy Chair will act with prudence in the emerging situation, ready to contribute to reconciliation, justice and understanding among people, Pope Benedict said and expressed certainty that good inter-state and inter-church relations will continue to improve for the common interest.
Jankovic confirmed that that same readiness exists in Serbia and voiced hope that the Holy Chair will use its enormous influence for the purpose of respect of law and justice, on which the world peace is based, it is added in the statement.
