Speaking at a press conference, which was held after he met with representatives of youth organisations in Serbia, Djelic stressed that according to the decisions taken by EU foreign ministers last week and the political agreement offered to Serbia, the EU plans to significantly increase funds for Serbian students to study in EU countries.
He said that a national youth agency will be formed because the formation of this agency is necessary for accessing funds from the European budget for Serbian students.
Representatives of youth organisations told Djelic that they will adopt a declaration expressing their wish for Serbia to become a member of the EU.
The Serbian Deputy Prime Minister pledged that he will forward the declaration to President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, other members of the commission and representatives of governments in EU countries.
Serbian Minister of Sports and Youth Snezana Samardzic-Markovic said that she supports this initiative because it shows the ability of young people to determine their own destiny and future. She added that she will request the EU to offer internships to at least 300 Serbian students in various EU institutions.
Representative of the Student Union of Serbia Simon Simonovic said that students and young people wish to be a part of Europe and to pursue further or higher education in EU countries. He added that young people were always a part of European integration.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Student Union of Serbia, the Serbian Citizens Initiative, the Youth Council of Vojvodina, the Belgrade Student Association and the organisation 1000 Young Leaders.
