According to a statement issued by the Deputy Prime Minister’s Cabinet, it was announced at the meeting that Serbia will co-preside at the 16th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development which is scheduled for May 5, 2008 and will be held at the UN Headquarters in New York. This is a major recognition of the efforts invested by Serbia in this area.
It was also decided at the meeting that during the upcoming months, relevant ministries will give their opinion regarding the draft strategy, so that it may be adopted by the government by the end of February.
After the adoption of the strategy, an action plan will be made, and pilot projects and an educational campaign will be implemented. After the strategy is adopted by the government, it will be sent to parliament for discussion.
The Council for Sustainable Development is made up of representatives of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society as well as the NGOs Young Researchers of Serbia, SMART Kolektiv and the Autonomous Women’s Centre.
Under the sustainable development strategy, Serbia’s economic development should be harmonised with social and environmental needs.
