In a statement to the press, Djelic said that this is a choice which Serbia will never make and pointed to the fact that Serbia has allies in Europe who will never make such demands of Serbia. He added that this will allow Serbia to continue acting in defence of its territorial integrity, and working on quicker entry into the EU, since these are two separate processes.
Serbia will not accept being coerced on the issue of Kosovo-Metohija. This cannot be any simpler or clearer. We expect to have a partnership, which means that the UN Security Council holds authority over the process of resolving the status of Kosovo-Metohija, and joining the EU is a matter under the jurisdiction of the European Commission and its member countries, said the Deputy Prime Minister.
He recalled that the target date for signing the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU is January 28, 2008, and added that during the previous few days a certain number of EU top officials, from the Italian Foreign Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, have said that the final assessment of Serbia’s cooperation with the Hague Tribunal is made by EU heads, not the Hague Tribunal’s Chief Prosecutor.
We are sorry that her latest report was negative and we will do everything we can, though many actions have already been undertaken to locate, arrest and handover Hague indictees, said Djelic and expressed his conviction that European partners can be convinced that Serbia is doing everything in its power to successfully conclude this cooperation.
