Serbia’s EU integration takes place on three tracks

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic stated today that Serbia’s EU integration is taking place on three tracks, namely, the process of being granted EU candidate status, visa regime liberalisation and usage of EU pre-accession IPA funds.

At a seminar dedicated to managing IPA funds, Djelic stressed that though the three tracks are taking place independently, they are firmly linked.
He said that the national EU integration strategy should soon be completed, as well as answers to 4,000 questions the EU will pose to Serbia after the Stabilisation and Association Agreement is signed, which should occur in end-January 2008.
Djelic announced that the Inter-Resource Group for the white Schengen will meet tomorrow to see how far Serbia has come in implementing agreements on visa relaxations and readmission.
Speaking about the third track, that is, IPA funds, Djelic recalled that Serbia recently signed an agreement with the European Commission according to which it received €1 billion for the period 2007–2011.
The Serbian government adopted the Bill on pre-accession funds and forwarded it to Serbian parliament for adoption under emergency procedure, said Djelic and added that the bill is to be debated this week and adopted by the end of the next one.
Djelic stressed that Serbia’s aim is to reach Bulgarian standards, and that is around €1 billion per year for development projects.
He added he expects Serbia to fulfil the criteria in order to use funds from EU structural funds intended for regional development, agriculture and human resources.
Djelic announced that talks on the construction of Serbia’s new facility with the EU, where Serbia’s embassy in Brussels will also be situated, are drawing to a close.
According to him, EU integration experts should soon go to Brussels as part of the Serbian negotiating team.
