In the course of the debate, in which Minister of Environmental Protection Sasa Dragin, State Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy Ljiljana Lucic and Deputy Prime Minister’s advisor for sustainable development Zoran Cvijanovic took part, Djelic stressed that new investments, modernisation of facilities, stable jobs and a healthy environment can be expected right there in Pancevo, which currently abounds with various problems.
Dragin stressed that the government has set aside €126 million for environmental protection projects in the Pancevo Oil Refinery which will be used to build environmentally safe plants.
Apart from that,
a protective tree belt is to be raised around the southern industrial zone in Pancevo which will yield 90 tonnes of oxygen, said the Minister and added that control of polluters has been increased and criminal charges are being filed against air polluters in Pancevo factories.
It was also stressed that the Serbian sustainable development strategy is of extreme importance for Pancevo because together with Belgrade this town should be the centre of the region.
The strategy will take care that Pancevo gets strategic importance because of the international road to Romania and the fact that it is situated on the banks of the Danube River, which is why the government has planned to expand the Pancevo harbour, as well as construct a cargo centre, airport and bridges on the Danube.
The public discussion was organised by the cabinet of the Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and the municipality of Pancevo with the support of the UNDP and the Swedish International Development Agency.
Pancevo is the last of 20 cities where in the course of the previous three months the Deputy Prime Minister’s cabinet held presentations of the strategy as part of the campaign “Sustainable Progress“.
The aim of the campaign is to engage Serbian citizens in the final drafting of this document through a country-wide debate, and via the website
www.odrzivi-razvoj.sr.gov.yu.
The adoption of the strategy will give Serbia clear guidance as to how to harmonise economic development and social issues related with environmental protection.
