Serbia to become fastest growing economy in Europe by year’s end

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic said today in Predejane near Leskovac that by the end of this year Serbia will be the country with the highest rate of economic growth in Europe, and added that during the upcoming years the GDP growth rate will be somewhere in between 6% and 7%.
Speaking at a panel discussion on the strategy for sustainable growth in Predejane, Djelic said that solutions for sustainable growth of Serbian economy are based on expertise, energy efficiency and recycling of secondary raw materials.
He said that the rate of unemployment in Serbia is now nearly 21%, and in underdeveloped municipalities it varies from 40% to 70%.
He said that the completion of Corridor 10 is a great economic opportunity for southern Serbia, noting that the funds have been secured and that the project should be finished within three years.
The Deputy Prime Minister also added that southern Serbia has great potential in bottled mineral water industry.
Djelic said that recycling needs to be developed in Serbia and announced a lot of improvements through the law drafted by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, which should soon be examined and adopted by parliament.
Speaking about salaries in Serbia, Djelic specified that the average salary in June stood at nearly €350, which at that time was higher than the average salary in Bulgaria, an EU country.
According to Djelic, Serbia has a high foreign trade deficit, mainly due to import of gas and oil and it is estimated that rational use of energy could reduce energy consumption by 40%.
Speaking of the level of investments in environmental protection in Serbia as compared with other countries, Djelic said that Serbia spends 0.4% GDP annually on environmental protection, while other countries spend four to seven times more.
