Addressing a joint press conference with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, Jeremic stressed that Serbia advocates safeguarding the territorial integrity of internationally recognised states, respect of international law and UN SC resolutions.
According to Jeremic, Serbia is making efforts to reach a compromise solution for the issue of the future status of Kosovo-Metohija, and Belgrade and Cyprus are in complete agreement regarding the matter.
He particularly pointed to the importance of the year 2008 in the process of Serbia’s EU association, and voiced hope that Serbia will get candidate status next year.
Serbia has the full support of Cyprus for signing the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA). We expect that there will finally be a breakthrough in this process in 2008, and a point will be reached from which there is no going back, and that is the point when it will be decided that the rightful place of the entire West Balkans is in the EU, said Jeremic.
Kozakou-Marcoullis said that she fully supports the Serbian position regarding negotiations on Kosovo-Metohija, and added that Cyprus fully supports Serbia’s EU membership.
Our position is very clear and well known in the EU when it comes to Kosovo-Metohija. We uphold respect of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and respect of UN principles. This is our principled stand, and not just regarding the southern Serbian province, she said.
She stressed that Cyprus will never recognise the independence of Kosovo-Metohija, and the EU is aware of this fact, since Nicosia absolutely supports the principle of respecting international law, the territorial integrity of states and UN resolutions.
According to Kozakou-Marcoullis, as a full member of the EU, Cyprus supports efforts being made by the international troika of envoys in the negotiations on the future status of Kosovo-Metohija and is in constant contact with EU representative in the troika Wolfgang Ischinger.
She voiced hope that a compromise will be reached which will be acceptable to both sides, since this is the only acceptable solution for Cyprus.
Kozakou-Marcoullis supported Serbia’s EU integration and pointed to the fact that Nicosia will do everything possible to ensure that Serbia gets EU membership since Serbia is part of the European family.
