Environmental protection is among most important investments in modern society

Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe Marek Belka said, summing up crucial results of the environmental policy and international competitiveness in globalisation during the afternoon session of the second day of the sixth ministerial conference, that transition countries do not have the privilege of choosing between economic growth and preservation of the environment.
During the presentation of the European Commission’s study on environmental policy, Belka pointed out that those who do not regard environmental protection as one of the most important investments in modern society are short-sighted.
In a round table on partnership in environmental protection, Director of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment Bruno Oberle presented his views and explained that accumulated economic costs can be avoided through good environmental resource management.
He gave the example of Switzerland which now has greater expenses to consider due to careless waste storage in the past.
Oberle said that the price of natural resources is rising and by wasting natural resources we also incur economic losses.
He added that those who do not take environmental protection will be easily pushed away on the market.
World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia Shigeo Katsu pointed out that finance ministers must find a way to financially back environmental protection.
