Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica met with Secretary General of the Council of Europe Walter Schwimmer today. Kostunica stressed that the Serbian government’s priorities are the building of institutions and the rule of law, noting that the appointment of the common Court of Serbia-Montenegro has rounded off the process of setting up the state union’s democratic institutions.
Speaking about the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, Kostunica said that it is necessary to ensure security for the Serb population in the province, through decentralisation and autonomy.
Schwimmer said that the Council of Europe is in favor of decentralisation in Kosovo-Metohija and that it insists on respect for human rights and the rights of minorities.
The Council of Europe will also seek to help the rebuilding of demolished churches and monasteries in Kosovo-Metohija, since they are part of Europe’s common cultural heritage, said Schwimmer.
