President of the National Council for Cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) Rasim Ljajic supported the initiative of the tribunal's Chief Prosecutor Carla del Ponte that ICTY convicts serve sentences in the states created in the territory of the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
On the occasion of the statement which del Ponte gave yesterday at a press conference in Brussels, Ljajic sent letters today to ICTY President Fausto Pocar and Registrar Hans Holthuis, supporting her initiative.
Ljajic said that Serbia's institutions are ready to accept convicts who would serve sentences in line with the highest legal standards.
Ljajic noted that after the tribunal entrusts the cases to national courts, serving the sentence in the country would be a step further in gaining mutual trust and successful completion of cooperation with the tribunal.
The National Council will invite representatives of other countries in the region to support this initiative.
