Djelic told the press that the Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Amado confirmed on two occasions that it is possible that Serbia signs the SAA by the end of the year.
He said that this weekend, during a working visit to Paris, he talked with Advisor to the French President Jean David-Levitte, who said on the occasion that France will work in the Security Council to organise a new round of negotiations on the future status of Kosovo-Metohija.
Djelic said that Levitte was formerly French ambassador to the US, represented France in the UN, and is one of the most influential diplomats.
We got support from him that France will make efforts to begin a new round of negotiations without a predetermined result, and for the first time it was mentioned that the entire Contact Group and all its members could be engaged in these talks, said Djelic.
The Deputy Prime Minister said he told Levitte that Serbia’s goal is to be granted EU candidate status in the second half of 2008 during French EU Presidency.
According to Djelic, Levitte said that December 15, 2008, when the EU Council of Ministers should meet, would be an appropriate date for that.
Djelic explained that not all EU countries are ready to vote for Serbia to be granted such status, but added it is the task of the state to make that happen.
He pointed out that the EU candidate status essentially changes the state of affairs for Serbia because EU financial assistance cam amount to as much as €600 million, which would immediately mean a huge step forward for foreign investments in Serbia.
Djelic also announced that several ministers will meet tomorrow to discuss the situation in the mining and metallurgical complex Bor, at the initiative of Serbian Minister of Economy and Regional Development Mladjan Dinkic.
