After attending a gathering organised in the Hotel Hyatt by the American Chamber of Commerce in Serbia, Djelic told the press that we have come a long way in resolving the issue, but Serbia is striving during this process to improve its position, including gaining support from the US for safeguarding its territorial integrity.
He stressed that strengthening economic cooperation between Serbia and the US could influence the political stand by the US on resolving the Kosovo-Metohija status issue, and added that he told the US businesspeople today that Serbia is a good place for investments.
Economy and politics are separate things, but we would like that with the help of businesspeople we lobby for the support of a major power like the US in safeguarding the territorial integrity of our country, said Djelic.
He said that he told US businesspeople that not a single country, not even Russia, will be given preferential treatment in the privatisation process in Serbia, since international tenders will be announced.
Djelic said that during the term of this government majority shares in public companies such as the Serbian oil industry NIS, the electric power industry of Serbia EPS and the mobile telephony operator Telekom Srbija will not be sold, and pointed to the fact that the experience of other countries, not just those in transition but also western countries, has shown that it is much better that privatisation is done gradually.
According to Djelic, the Serbian government wishes to carry out the privatisation process while keeping in mind the long term interest of the state and citizens since energy and telecommunication are strategic sectors.
Djelic said that in these areas the state must act wisely to protect its own and the interests of its citizens.
