Djelic stressed that Serbia is defending its territorial integrity but is willing to be a constructive participant in the talks and agree to certain compromises, provided the talks are true.
According to Djelic, at the moment all speaks in favour of the fact that the EU is striving toward multilateralism and providing more time for finding a solution.
The Deputy Prime Minister said that at the EU summit starting tomorrow the issue of a joint position of 27 EU countries on the resolution of Kosovo-Metohija issue will be discussed.
He explained that EU top officials demand that by end-July a new resolution be adopted in the UN Security Council which would enable a new era in the Kosovo status settlement process.
Djelic said that after the meetings he had in the past three days with EU ministers and officials, he is convinced that Serbia can achieve its goal to get the EU candidate status at the end of 2008 and to join the "white Schengen list".
He said that EU officials praised the work of the Serbian Ministry of Interior because of the latest arrests of Hague indictees and operations related to the fight against organised crime.
According to Djelic, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso invited Serbian President Boris Tadic and Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica to visit the EU and they will travel to Brussels in weeks to come.
Next week Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic will meet with EU officials in Brussels, Djelic announced and Serbian Minister of Interior Dragan Jocic will travel often to Brussels to work on the reform of security structures together with European Commission representatives, as part of the EU process of stabilisation and association.
Solana stressed that the EU wants a new Security Council resolution which would allow the possibility for new talks on the Kosovo status and emphasised that Serbia’s EU integration talks are completely separate from the Kosovo issue resolution process.
He added that Brussels is ready to improve and speed up assistance to Serbia regarding the EU accession process and that the Kosovo issue is being resolved in the UN with the participation if the EU, USA and Russia.
