Rehn and Djelic stressed that the continuation of talks is very important for Serbia’s road towards the EU and added that in the course of this official round they will look back at the results of the talks achieved so far and at opened chapters regarding interior affairs and the judiciary.
I am delighted that Serbia is back at the negotiating table and on the EU road. The Stabilisation and Association Agreement is a key step in relations between the EU and Serbia and its implementation is an entry ticket for a process of further integration, said Rehn following the opening of the new round of talks. He also said that the continuation of talks is a result of the new Serbian government’s concrete activities.
Rehn reiterated that full cooperation with the Hague Tribunal is a condition for the SAA to be signed which will lead to the arrest and extradition of the remaining indictees.
Djelic said that Serbia’s goal is to conclude talks in the next several months and initial the agreement, so that by end-2008 it may become an EU candidate country.
He announced the Serbian government will put into force economic reforms which will give strong foothold to the implementation of the SAA and that by the end of the month it will also adopt the budget.
He added that the expected annual inflation rate in Serbia is 6%.
Djelic also stressed that this is an important day for Serbia, adding that the country has good chances of concluding the SAA by the year’s end although a great deal of work will remain in order to achieve its aim – candidate country status.
He added the aim will not be easy to achieve, however he is convinced that Serbia has political, economic and human capacities to do that.
The great round of technical talks on the SAA between the EU and Serbia should take place in the first half of July and will concern the customs, trade regimes, agriculture and industry, and the European Commission will send Serbia its proposal on the dynamics and date of the next round of talks.
