Serbian Deputy Minister of Diaspora Aleksandar Cotric and Assistant Minister Miodrag Jaksic met in Vukovar with high representatives of Serbs in Croatia. They agreed that the position of Serbs there has been markedly improved after the election of the government of prime minister Ivo Sanader. However, it is necessary that Croatian authorities fully meet their obligations mandated by the agreement with Serb deputies, including return of property, tenants' right of tenure and reconstruction of Serb houses.
Representatives of the Serb community in Croatia said that there can be no massive return of Serbs while 800 indictments against those who took part in the war are in force. They highlighted that Croatian judiciary must apply equal standards of criminal responsibility at war crimes trials, regardless of national and religious affiliation of the accused.
Members of the delegation of the Serbian Ministry of Diaspora said that they will push for quick adoption of an interstate agreement, which will protect minority rights of Serbs in Croatia and Croats in Serbia-Montenegro.
Cotric and Jaksic spoke in Vukovar with deputy in the Croatian parliament Vojislav Stanimirovic, president of the common municipalities' council Jovan Ajdukovic, assistant minister in the Croatian government Mirko Markovic, Bishop of Osijek and Baranje Lukijan and the clergy of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
